Annual Extended Family Photos: A Beach Tradition

My family has a tradition. We take a family vacation every year to the the beach, usually in Duck, North Carolina.

It’s about a 6 hour drive from where we live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Every year we have the same debate. Should we stop at small town Virginia Diner, famous for it’s peanuts, fried southern cooking and long lines?

The diner has the good fortune of being perfectly positioned for a lunch stop on the drive to the beach. Dad says no. We outvote him. Surely the wait won’t be so long this time?

It always is.

Our beach holiday is characterized by lots of traditions. Morning bike rides into town for coffee. Swimming for hours. Begging my Mom to demonstrate her high school skill of synchronized swimming. Taco night. Book reading. Putting together puzzles. Kite flying. And the annual family photos.

Our annual photos have continued as the kids have grown up, and our family traditions continue.
