A Family Beach Tradition

My family has a tradition. We take a family vacation every year to the the beach in Duck, North Carolina.

It’s about a 6 hour drive from where my parents and sister’s family live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Every year we have the same debate. Should we stop at small town Virginia Diner, famous for it’s peanuts, fried southern cooking and long lines?

The diner has the good fortune of being perfectly positioned for a lunch stop on the drive to the beach. Dad says no. We outvote him. Surely the wait won’t be so long this time?

It always is.

Our beach holiday is characterized by lots of traditions. Morning bike rides into town for coffee. Swimming for hours. Begging my Mom to demonstrate her high school skill of synchronized swimming. Taco night. Book reading. Putting together puzzles. Kite flying. And the annual family photos.

My sister Megan sends out a family Christmas card every year, and I take the photos. This year we headed down to the beach at sunset with Woody and a kite. The moon had started to rise and a pink glow emerged from the horizon.

Next year I will be in Washington D.C. in June, a bit too early to make it for our beach tradition. The 2017 Crowe family christmas cards might need to be in a different location, but our annual family photos will continue.

I am an award winning wedding and family portrait photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. I regularly travel to Washington D.C. and Alexandria Virginia to photograph weddings and families.
