Seeking Connection in a Digital Age

Dancing in the middle of the night

I looked up from my phone with a jerk. It’s a habit I hate to love.

Your world narrows to a window the size of a couple business cards. We feed an endless desire for cat videos and news from afar.

We look for connections- to the world, to our friends. Real life intrudes with a start when I glance up at the barrista.

He smiles at me. We know each other.

It reminds me. The connections we seek exist outside of our phones.

Humanity touches humanity in the moments like these.

And some of the most human moments we have are when we gather to celebrate. We climb out of our digital worlds and into the same room.

Weddings bring us together. They create shared history. It’s times like these when we are most connected.

When we put down our phones and dance.

I’m a wedding photographer based in Alexandria Virginia working with couples in the Washington DC, Maryland and Capital Area. Want to connect? Get in touch on my website: www.laurenbarkume.com/contact
