The Top 6 Locations for Cherry Blossom Spring Photoshoots in Washington, DC & Alexandria, VA
Each spring, the Washington, DC area explodes with pink petals as cherry blossoms burst into bloom — and couples, families, tourists and photographers flock to capture their iconic beauty. Whether you’re planning an engagement or couples session, family portraits, or artistic portraits, the DMV region delivers some of the most iconic and photogenic backdrops for cherry blossoms (and of course all the other spring flowers).
Below are my favorite locations, and tips, to help you plan unforgettable cherry blossom portrait sessions.
Tidal Basin
Old Town Alexandria, Virginia
Enid A. Haupt Garden by the Smithsonian Castle
Hains Point Loop
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
National Mall & Monuments
1. Tidal Basin
The Tidal Basin is the crown jewel of iconic DC cherry blossom portrait locations. With sweeping views of the water, graceful Yoshino cherry trees, and iconic monuments peeking through blooms, this scenic spot defines spring in DC, and brings 1.5 million visitors to the region to see the blooms during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Any DC resident who’s made the trek to see the blossoms during peak bloom has also probably encountered the crowds, road closures and crawling traffic. If you have your heart set on portraits here, sunrise on a weekday is the ideal time to reduce the number of crowds you’re dealing with during your session.
Why it’s amazing:
Iconic backdrop: Views of the Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and cherry branches create classic, romantic frames.
Soft morning light: Sunrise sessions make the most magic here, with gentle light filtering through the blossoms.
Pro tip: Arrive early before sunrise and pick a weekday to beat crowds and enjoy softer, more flattering light. The Tidal Basin is easily the busiest spot during Cherry Blossom season, and parking can be especially tough with limited parking spots, road closures and slow moving one way traffic.
2. Old Town Alexandria
Just across the Potomac River, Old Town Alexandria offers historic charm and waterfront spring flowers. From cherry-dotted streets to Founders Park and waterfront piers, this area offers a huge variety of spots with seasonal color and beautiful waterfront views.
Best spots in Old Town:
Founders Park: Founders Park along the river has several blossoming trees and spring flowers perfect for couples or family sessions. Keep walking along the river to enjoy the Waterfront river views, docks, and curving paths with spring flowers. Although cherry blossoms are not heavily concentrated in one area, there are several dotted around the park.
Cobblestone side streets: Classic Alexandria alleyways featuring original cobblestones are always a favorite spot.
City Streets & Historic Charm: Hidden nooks with seasonal flowers complement the cherry trees beautifully.
Pro tip: Although the cherry blossoms are not as concentrated in Alexandria, VA as they are in the Tidal Basin, there are fewer crowds and parking restrictions. Weekends are still very busy along the waterfront, so weekday sessions are ideal.
3. Enid A. Haupt Garden –by the Smithsonian Castle
Tucked next to the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall in Washington D.C., the Enid A. Haupt Garden is an often-overlooked gem for the early blooming magnificent magnolia blossom portraits. This beautifully landscaped space offers layers of color, manicured floral beds, and the gorgeous architecture of the Smithsonian Castle.
Why it’s great:
Layered garden beauty: Combines soft pink and white magnolia blossoms with formal garden structure for portraits.
Architectural interest: The Smithsonian Castle adds unique texture and historic ambiance.
Less crowded: A quieter alternative to the Tidal Basin with equally stunning visuals.
Pro tip: The magnolia trees here bloom earlier than the cherry blossoms, so this spot is a more relaxed atmosphere perfect for spring photoshoots that avoid the peak cherry blossom crowds.
4. Hains Point Loop
If the idea of thousands of tourists jockeying for the perfect spot at the Tidal Basin has you anxious, you’ll find abundant rows of multiple types of cherry blossom trees along the East Potomac Park and Hains Point Loop trail, which are adjacent to the Tidal basin. With fewer crowds, and a more relaxing experience, this is a beautiful location if your priority is a quieter experience and don’t need the monuments in your photos.
5. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
Northern Virginia’s Meadowlark Botanical Gardens offers about 100 cherry blossom trees of 20 unique varieties, in addition to a variety of spring flowers. Cherry trees dot the lake edges and the Gazebo in the center of the lake offer a beautiful backdrop with far fewer crowds than the Tidal Basin in DC. Cherry trees here will also bloom at different times from late march to April, depending on the varietals. Meadowlark does require timed photography permits for professional photoshoots, so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
6. National Mall & DC Monuments
Cherry blossom trees are by no means confined to the Tidal Basin in DC, and there are cherry blossomed lined streets, parks all over Washington D.C. This handy Map from the Washington Post will help you locate cherry trees all across the district, and has some recommended spots for viewing.
Planning Tips for Cherry Blossom Portrait Sessions
If you’re a client prepping for a photoshoot here are some tips to make the most of cherry blossom season:
🌸 Check the bloom forecast: Cherry blossoms peak only once each year—timing your session for the peak or a day or two after ensures the most abundant color. Peak bloom is not announced until 10 days before the bloom, and can be hard to pin down. Even if you can’t make a time work exactly in the middle of peak bloom, there are cherry trees and magnolia trees blooming all around the DMV both before and after the “peak” timing. Remember, pre or post peak bloom can also offer fewer crowds and still feature beautiful spring color.
📅 Consider weekday sessions: These spots can get crowded on weekends; weekdays or early mornings offer smoother sessions.
🎒 Bring essentials: Bring flats, warm layers and hand warmers. Early spring can often be very cold and windy, especially at the Tidal Basin. Early spring gardens and tidal basin paths often feature muddy and uneven paths, so flats are better than heels here.
📍 Permits & guidelines: DC and Alexandria parks may have specific guidelines during peak season—check ahead and plan accordingly.
Final Thoughts
From the iconic monuments of the Tidal Basin to the historic charm of Old Town Alexandria and the architectural grace near the Smithsonian Castle, the DMV area is a cherry blossom photography dream. Whether you prefer sweeping water vistas, quiet garden elegance, or classic civic monuments, these locations offer rich, timeless backdrops that make every spring portrait session unforgettable.
